What is a selfie?
Selfie is just a different way of saying Self-Portrait , it is used today to infer a photographic selfies on a phone and share trough social media websites like instagram, snapchat, twitter and in this case weebly. A selfie in my opinion is a picture taken by yourself of yourself but others have other ways of explaining what a selfie is. I don't take selfies because I just find it boring so I don't take any but other people might think differently.
Vivian Maier self-portraits - a curated exhibition
We were asked to create a mini exhibition using only Vivian Maier's pictures. Me and my group did it like this.
We placed the pictures in this way starting with the shadows, and moving on to her self portraits. We also wrote a little bit about her story and this is the final piece .
Finding Vivian Maier
|
We watched a documentary about the mystery of Vivian Maier to see and find out what happened. In the video we found out many things and we got to see most of her photos and I found it really interesting the way she took her photos.

Some of the pictures I took so far
Pictures with the pinhole camera.
Pictures in the darkroom using the red light.
Pictures taken at sea-life .
photograms.
Photoshoped images.
Shadows.
The best picture.
This picture is not a picture of me, its actually a picture of one of my classmates that I took but I liked the picture so much I still put it on my website. The reason the picture is upside down is because I was on the floor with the camera and I really liked how it looked. We took the picture inside the dark room with the red light and it made the picture look unique and different to all the others. But this wasn't the only picture we took in the dark room we also took 3 more that you can see if you scroll up.
The worst picture.
In my opinion this picture is the worst because it 's not really a self portrait because you can barely see me in the photo. It's not a bad photo it's just the fact that I cant see myself doesn't make it as good as the others. The idea was to take a "selfie" with the pinhole camera to make a unique picture but it did not look that well.
sELF PORTRAIT COMPARISON
Francesca Woodman Kenneth Josephson Lee Friedlander
There are lots of things going on in Friedlander's selfie which makes it different to the other selfies that we were given and on the foreground on Friedlander's image there is a reflection of someone on the window in a street but you cant tell if it's him or not but you can see that he is holding something and I think it's the camera but I'm not too sure but its like a tiny screen and on it you can see a tiny version of the man taking the photograph, you can also see the frame of the actual window that the photo was taken in and you can see through the window a door from the inside. Then on the mid ground there are two cars one of them which is passing by and the other is parked on the sidewalk next to the person taking the photo. Next to the parked car there is this man that seems to have no face is staring at the person taking the photo and he is wearing a suit and tie and seems to also have a fedora on his head, this man with no face just gives the picture a scary feeling to it. In the background there is this quite big building maybe a supermarket or a factory of some sorts but it seems to be empty, there is also this big sign next to the building but you can't tell what it says because of the position it's in and next to the sign there is this lamppost and from the angle the picture was taken in it make it look bigger than the building behind it.
There isn't much going on in woodman's photo which makes this a lot easier to describe but I think it's the weirdest and most interesting between the three photos, but that's just my opinion. On the foreground of the photo there is this doorway with no actual door, it's just the door frame and it seems quite destroyed and old and surrounding the door frame there's this plane white wall that also seems like it's old, the doorframe and the wall look like this to me because you can see the paint peeling off. The mid ground is the weirdest part of this photo, there is this massive white chair (I think) and behind it there is a white rectangle I'm not sure what it is but there is something behind it, I know this because of the hand that is shown in front of the rectangle but you can't tell who's or what hand that is from. I just think that this picture was just taken from a horror movie.
Now Josephson's selfie. In the foreground of the photo you can see Josephson's arm and he's holding this black square and in the middle of that square there is this square shaped hole that is focusing on a hand but I will describe the rest of that when I get to the mid ground. On the foreground there is also this car and on the right wheel of the car there is Josephson's shadow, on his shadow you can also see the square withe the square shaped hole in it. Now moving on to the mid ground. Like I said when I was describing the foreground the photo is focused on what's inside that square shaped hole and that is the hand inside the car, you can't see the person inside the car because the square is covering him but you can only see his hand sticking out of the cars window. In the background of the image there is this parked car that looks exactly like the car that the selfie is focused on but maybe its just a reflection of the car on a window or a mirror behind it, also next to the other car there is this person but again like the other pictures he looks like he has no face and he is riding a bike.
I think that what is mysterious about all of these photos and what also connects them all is that every person in each selfie does not have a face, they do but you can't see it. This no face thing changes the whole mood of the photo and also the colour that the photos where taken in, black and white, just makes the pictures look mysterious and also quite scary but the thing is it wasn't an accident, they made it look like this on purpose to make their pictures look different.
The one that I like the most and the one that catches my eye is Josephson's. I really like Josephson's because of the viewfinder, he uses the viewfinder as if it was a different screen with a different photo on it and the fact that the viewfinder doesn't have to be in the shape of a square makes it even more interesting photos and that's exactly what I am going to do for my homework.

Pictures inspired by Kenneth Josephson
As a homework Mr Nicholls asked us to take some pictures inspired by your favorite one of the pictures from the assessment we did and I thought creating my own version of Kenneth Josephson´s image would be a good idea and these are my pictures
My pictures aren't exactly the same as Josephson's but they are similar, I use the viewfinder to focus on one thing and some of the pictures i zoomed in on and in my opinion those are the most successful because they are different but then some of the other pictures that I took the object that I was focusing on goes through the actual viewfinder and these turned out the best in my opinion. The worst pictures that I took though are the normal pictures that are based off of Josephson's because they are quite boring and everyone has already seen pictures like these before .
the best picture
I find this the best looking picture because its different to all the others I took, It's focused on one thing and the object that the viewfinder is focusing on goes through the actual viewfinder and I just like how it looks...
The worst picture
I think this one is the worst because it's exactly like a copy Josephson's picture and I want different images that are based off his work and not the same, that is why I find this picture dull.
